Tijdens de Grote Depressie van de jaren dertig worden in de VS opmerkelijke wedstrijden georganiseerd. Het laatste stel dat een dansmarathon weet vol te houden kan een geldbedrag van vijftienhonderd dollar winnen, destijds een klein kapitaal. Om de arme sloebers die zich inschrijven voor het wrede volksvermaak nog wat extra uit te dagen worden de dansjes onderbroken door een soort tussensprintje. De wedstrijd duurt gruwelijk lang. Meeslepende film, met prima spel van de hele cast. Young kreeg een Oscar voor zijn rol als cynische ceremoniemeester.

In the midst of the Great Depression, manipulative emcee Rocky (Gig Young) enlists contestants for a dance marathon offering a $1,500 cash prize.
