Express condolences at ajc.com/obits MILLS, Helen 001794461 HELEN HOPKINS MILLS Helen Hopkins Mills, 75, died April 14, 2005, at her home in Arlington, Virginia. She was born January 23, 1930 in Atlanta to the late John Livingston Hopkins and Elizabeth Hawkins Hopkins and took great pride in her long history and civic involvement in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia. Helen graduated from North Fulton High School in 1948 and later that year married James Thomas Mills, her husband of 56 years. She as a person of great intellectual curiosity, extraordinary beauty, humor and wit, and tremendous compassion and generosity of spirit. She had a special appreciation of the natural world and became an early activist in the envi- romental movement.

She served for many years on the National Board of Directors of Friends of the Earth and was involved with numerous other enviromental causes. Her dedication to enviromental protection inspired and influenced her entire family and many others who came to know her through her enviromental work and stands as one of her great legacies. Helen had a passionate interest in politics and public affairs and was an active member of the traveling across the country to campaign for then Governor Jimmy Carter. Her papers in support of his candidacy and on enviromental issues are archived in the Carter Center. She was a delegate to two national Democratic conventions.

Helen was deeply devoted to her four children and their families and was a constant source of love, support and amusem*nt for them all. They include children Helen Mills and Susan Spriggs of Washington, DC; Betsy and Steven Levitas of Raleigh, North Carolina; Jim and Ibby Mills of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mary Ann Mills and Jason Clay of Arlington, Virginia and grandchildren, Kristen Spriggs, Alexa Clay, Zale Clay, Jeannie Mills, Jacob Levitas, Isobel Mills, Emilia Levitas and Hawkins Clay. Mr. Hinton was born July 10, 1918 in Woodbury, Georgia. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. He retired from the Air Force to Orlando in 1963. After retiring from the Air Force, he enjoyed a second career as a stockbroker for 20 years.

He moved to Venice, Florida in 1969, where he lived until his return to Central Florida in 2001. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church in Venice, as well as the Masonic lodge, the Shrine of Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Aircraft owners and Pilots Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne in 2004. He is survived by his son, Jay S. Hinton Jr.

(Terri) of Orlando; sister, Rosemary Johnson of Tate, Georgia; and grandsons, Jay S. Hinton III of Ft. Myers, FL; and David Hinton of Smyrna, GA. Funeral services for Mr. Hinton will be held at 3:00 p.m.

COL. CARL THOMAS GARRISON Dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, and friend Carl passed away peacefully among family at his home. He was born on May 29, 1918 in Charlotte, NC. He began his long military service at Oak Ridge Military Academy. Soon after he married the love of his life Marian Mercer of Macon, GA.

A year later he was called to active duty during World War II. He fought bravely on Day in Normandy on Omaha Beach and received the Bronze Star. In 1946 their first child, Carl Thomas, Jr. was born in Atlanta, GA. They were soon bound for Bamberg, Germany.

A few years later Carl was transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas where their daughter Kathy was born in 1956. After leaving active service, they resided for a short time in both Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C. They settled in Atlanta in 1963. Carl and family became active members at newly established Embry Hills United Methodist Church. After retiring from Garrett-Callahan Company Carl continued to live an active happy life.

The beach was one of his favorite destinations visiting friends in Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, and Tampa. Carl courageously battled Lymphoma for the last 3years with his usual sense of humor and positive attitude. Carl had a great sense of humor, friendly personality, and was admired by many. God and family were everything to him and he will be remembered and loved forever by his family and friends. Surviving are his wife of 64 years Marian, of Atlanta; son and daughter-in- law, Tom and Elaine; grandson, Tom and wife, Jennifer; great-grandson, Cole; granddaughter, Bree, of Houston, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Alberto Ponce DeLeon; granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachel (who will deeply miss their of Atlanta.
